Wheelchairs

A wheelchair can  be used when walking is difficult or impossible due to illness, injury or disability.  Wheelchairs come in a variety of formats to meet the specific needs of the user, this may include specialised seating adaptations, individualised controls and may be specific to a particular activity.

Do's and Don'ts

  • Ensure the wheelchair is in good working order
  • Ensure if required the wheels are properly inflated
  • Ensure the brakes are in working order
  • Ensure the seatbelt is present and working
  • Ensure the footplates are present and in place correctly
  • Do not use if there is no seatbelt or footplates attached
  • Do not use if brakes do not engage
  • Do not use if the seat, arm rest or back rest has any signs of damage
  • Do not use if the wheelchair appears to big or too small for the individual
