Chair Techniques Using Verbal Instruction

Verbal instructions from a seated position to standing:

  • Ask the person to put their hands on the arms of the chair
  • Ask the person to bring their body forward/lean forward
  • Ask the person to move forward towards the front of the chair by using a side-to-side movement
  • Ask the person to place their feet flat on the floor in a comfortable position
  • Ask the person to look in the direction where they are going
  • Ask the person to push up

Verbal instructions from a standing position to a seated position:

  • Ask the person to step back until they feel the chair on the backs of their knees
  • Ask the person to push their bottom out lowering their body down
  • Ask the person to feel for the arms of the chair with their hands
  • Ask the person to gently sit back in the chair

  • Promote the individual's independence
  • Speak slowly and clearly when using verbal instructions
  • Ensure the individual understands the verbal instructions
  • Ensure the individual has all small aids to support them for example glasses, hearing aids
  • Enable the individual time to process the verbal instructions
  • Remember to stand at the side and lower yourself to eye level when giving verbal instructions
  • Do not move the individual's body, arms, and feet into position
  • Do not rush the individual when giving verbal instructions
  • Do not talk at a fast pace when giving verbal instructions
  • Do not stand over the individual or directly infront of the individual this can cause distress
